Quoting the press material from Jay’s 2006 theatre extravaganza Jay Alan Zimmerman’s Incredibly Deaf Musical:
Hi folks, my name is Jay and, yes, I’m a real person… not necessarily the person I wanted to be, but that’s life and that’s what my musical is about. I started out as a composer of all kinds of music with those big academy award winning dreams, but my body had different ideas. So what do you do when you’ve dedicated your life to music but became deaf? Try comedy so you can become mute? I’ve tried a lot of things, but I’m no Beethoven…YET! So come join me in a good laugh, a good cry, and a good booty shaking . . . Come ready to dance—even if you’re in a wheelchair!
About the composer:

Jay Alan Zimmerman’s numerous film scores, musicals, and instrumental works have been heard in a wide variety of venues such as New York’s Walter Reade Theatre, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris, France. Films include his award-winning musical shorts “Love Burns” and “Pawns”; acting credits span from Off-Off Broadway shows to voice-overs for McDonald’s and DC Comics; and he is the author of over 30 children’s songs published by MONDO publishing and Warner/Chappell. Though normal-hearing at the start of his career, Jay has become deaf to speech but still hears some music below middle C. He’s married to the abstract painter, Lisa Ingram, and father of Zachary.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT… On May 17th (i.e. this Sunday) in New York City, Jay will be performing at two events in one night! Quoting Jay’s blog:
First up, I’ll be premiering some songs from a new show I’m developing, called POMES: The Tru Storie of Wergle Flomp and Othr $49.95 Poets. In the late 1990s, the English Poet David Taub set out to expose the International Library of Poetry scam (aka poetry.com) by writing deliberately horrible poems—which I have set to equally horrible (and hilarious) music. The poems include “Wots A Pome,” “Nicky Nacky Noo” and “Yew Gotta Larf.” Mr. Taub’s creations inspired the annual Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest, which you are free to enter… Perhaps I’ll set your disturbing poem to music as well! Now, what setting would be perfect for a “deaf composer” to sing horrible poems? Why the Liberace Birthday Bash, of course. The infamous cartist, HOOP, is throwing a party in honor of Liberace at the Westbeth Community Room, 55 Bethune St., NYC. You’ll find me there at 6:30pm. Next up, we’ll march over to The Duplex, for the new cabaret show of Matt Lutz at 9:30pm. He’s doing three of my jazzy songs: “Time To Give In,” “Nice Guy” and the premiere of “SMOKIN”—about a guy who looks cool smoking but he’s allergic to smoke. It’s a fun filled evening, so don’t miss it!
