Interesting developments…after the jump!

***

Quoting a recent email from regular Irked contributor Helen McFadyen:

This week alone, [my guide dog Opal] has appeared in television, radio and newspaper interviews multiple times. First captured at the Halifax service dog park by CBC radio, then on TV and radio outside City Hall and crowded into Regional Council chambers with 25 of her canine friends (75 blind people were present and protesting, VERY interested in a hot ‘free transit pass for the blind’ issue up for decision), then AGAIN on CBC radio with a song request (Everything Reminds Me of My Dog, by Jane Siberry).

-

Irked Magazine first covered the hot free transit pass for the blind issue back in February.

To recap for newcomers: Last year, Halifax, Nova Scotia announced a rather cockamamie decision to stop providing free bus passes to blind people (reversing a half-century-old policy). The budget cuts will save the city—at most—$420,000 peanuts dollars per year (and that’s a VERY optimistic figure).

Quite a few Haligonians are, shall we say, irked about it.

Discrimination?

Devolution?

Penny-pinching?

Wonky policy gambit?

Governmental retardation???

Well, the story’s not going away!
