Peterborough, ON – Lewis “Codeboy” Schofield knows more about hospitals, emergency rooms and pediatric wards than anyone ever ought to know in one lifetime.

The past 18 months have been harder on him and his mother than either of them could have imagined 2 years ago. Still, between trips to Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and treatments at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, appointments with his neurologist and visits to his pediatrician, Lewis still finds life to be an amazing adventure.

Lewis has a form of Autism known as Asperger Syndrome. Autism strikes 1 child in 166.

Eighteen months ago, Lewis was also diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a debilitating rare and complex neuromuscular auto-immune disorder for which there is no cure and that strikes 1 child in 500,000.

“We know how hard it’s been on the family both financially and emotionally over the past couple of years,” says Melissa Beeby, co-organizer of the Lewis Schofield Benefit Concert and Silent Auction slated for Saturday, September 12 at Market Hall Performing Centre located at 336 George Street. Along with Angella Demell of Centre Stage Performing Arts School, the two Peterborough women have secured some of Peterborough’s best loved live artists to perform at the fundraiser.

“Beau Dixon has been working on a special song for Lewis,” Angella Demell revealed, “and we’re hoping he’ll unveil it at the fundraiser on the 12th.”

The line up for the event is impressive with acts including Beau Dixon, Mercy Steelwood (Jessica R-J, Tom Eastland, Mark Tanski and special guests), local francophone chanteuse Catherine Caron Bick, Elyse Bruce, comedienne Rose Bergeron, the Centre Stage Performing Arts dancers and more.

The Silent Auction is shaping up to be an awesome offering of incredible items—including 6 signed CDs from Jay Semko of the very successful 80s band, the Northern Pikes.

Even though this is a fundraiser to help Lewis Schofield and his family during difficult financial times, he and his mom have asked that a portion of the proceeds be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“The Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted me a special wish I’ve had ever since I was 4 years old,” Lewis explains. “It’s only fair that I do my best to help them grant another kid a wish and that’s why it’s important to give some of the money raised at the concert to the foundation.” [Ed's note: From September 19 through 26, the Make A Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario (Canada) is granting Lewis his wish to visit Epcot Center at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida.]

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets can be purchased by email at benefitconcert2009@gmail.com or by telephone at 745-8119. Tickets purchased by email or by telephone for groups of 4 or more will be entered into a draw for a chance to win an original print by Thomas D. Taylor.
