A 47-year-old wheelchair-bound mother who had a stroke 18 months ago has been forced to do her banking on the street after staff at her local NatWest branch refused to lift her up two steps “for health and safety reasons.”

Is this the 21st century??

Quoting Carole Duckworth:

“All my banking is done outside – paying money in, receiving financial advice – with people walking past all the time overhearing. It makes me feel very self-conscious about my privacy. I don’t want people listening in on my private affairs. I have to be out there in all weathers and if it rains I get absolutely soaked. They say they can’t carry me in any more because of health and safety but I’m risking my health by sitting out in the cold and wet every week. People don’t seem to appreciate how hard it is but I just want to live a normal life and I don’t want to have to bank anywhere else.”

.

This is brazenly discriminatory!

It’s too bad Kenny doesn’t make trans-atlantic house calls…

So the local NatWest branch refused to lift this woman up two steps “for health and safety reasons.” If it’s so much of a concern for them and their staff, then it’s about time they made their bank wheelchair accessible!

Surely the Human Rights Tribunal in her area would be most interested in hearing about this discriminatory attitude the bank, its administrators and its employees have towards this mom and other wheelbound customers like her.

Thanks for posting this at Irked Magazine. Let’s get some sort of email writing campaign going to help this woman!

I can’t believe that this is still happening with everything we now have available for accessibility. An email writing campaign or a petition is a great idea!
