The Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival, happening as we speak in Toronto, explores cinematic representations of mental health and addiction. Film and video programs are followed by post-screening panel discussions with people who receive mental health and addiction services, as well as writers, directors, actors, health care professionals and academics.

“I know in my heart that I should be dead. Most of my friends are dead. The way I lived, I had no respect at all for my own life. So I’m living on borrowed time—and there’s liberation in that.”

Cold Turkey – by Karen Stuebing

Cold Turkey
by Karen Stuebing
Drug addiction is a huge problem in Southern West Virginia and other parts of Appalachia. In my little neighborhood alone, I can take you for a short drive and point to every third house: “That guy’s a dealer,” “He’s strung out,” “She uses.” This [...]

This is about recovery. As bad as that was, this is the hard part. The recidivism rate for narcotic addiction is over 90%.

How do I become one of that small percentage that makes it? How do I overcome depression and cravings? How do I avoid situations where there are drugs when half the people I know are on them? I can walk 20 feet and be at another addict’s door.

I decided to use my camera to chronicle this part. It took me awhile to pick it up again. When I did I knew I really had entered into the recovery phase.

This is my journey and I'm putting it out there for the world to see. I want to be one of the winners.
