Six years ago, Crystal Renn was an unknown size-0 model who moved to New York from Clinton, Mississippi, to make it big. She struggled with her weight for years, however, and finally made the bold decision to switch to plus-size modeling. Now a healthy 165 pounds, she is the highest-paid plus-size model in the world, having graced the covers of American Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and appeared in Dolce & Gabbana ads. The 23-year-old recently talked with TIME Magazine about her new book Hungry, her size-0 modeling days and walking the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier. Here are the highlights:

How’s THIS for a daily mantra…

The internet is a gloriously diverse library (in which you don’t have to whisper!), and we recently “surfed upon” a short audio clip that was recorded several months ago, during the 2009 Homeless Count. WNYC News (New York Public Radio, very worth checking out) was speaking with a gentleman who’s striving to be honourable, right-minded and accountable to the people he loves.

When a microphone was put in front of him, he said this:

TRANSCRIPT:

“I owe this for me,

and I owe this for my family.

I’m just trying to live a right life now.”

Meet Ricky Trione, an unbelievably talented painter who is blind

About Ricky Trione:

Ricky’s vision left him one eye at a time. His left eye was permanently damaged in an accident while on active duty as Captain in the Army in 1993. A logging truck slung an object through the open window of his vehicle, destroying his retina. The second accident happened years later in 2000 when Ricky’s vehicle overheated along Highway 59 in North Baldwin County, Alabama. Ricky pulled to the side of the road to check the engine of the vehicle just as an 18-wheeler drove by and threw a large section of tire tread from the truck. The debris hit him across his right eye and knocked him unconscious, causing permanent blindness.

A few weeks ago, IrkedMagazine.com published a series of features about Metro Transit’s decision to stop offering free bus passes to Nova Scotians who are blind or have minimum sight. To be deliberately cheeky and hyperbolic (but also to express our bona fide outrage) we dubbed the debacle “Halifaxgate.”

After reading our coverage, Canadian icon Terry Kelly has agreed to weigh in. For those of you who don’t know Terry, please allow us to introduce just a few of his many accomplishments:
