A Very Important (and Special!) Public Service Announcement

Quoting Elyse Bruce:

Recently, the news carried an item about Canadian Blood Services. In light of the H1N1 flu and vaccines, blood donors have been shying away from donating blood. Blood donations are important all year round however they are even more important at this time of year. In some areas, blood donations are half of the required weekly minimum for hospitals in their region.

.

After hearing the news, 14-year-old Lewis “Codeboy” Schofield decided to do what he could to help get the word out that blood donations are greatly needed, after having undergone IVIg treatments in 2008 and 2009. So he scripted, filmed and produced this 55 second PSA currently uploaded to YouTube.

.

Please forward the link to this video to friends, family, colleagues and the media in your area. It doesn’t matter if you live in Canada or live in another country … blood donations save lives!

.

Thanks!

“I just want them to know the facts

instead of all this gibberish.”

— Lewis Schofield

CBC.ca:

A 14-year-old Regina native, now living in Ontario, is earning recognition for his efforts in dispelling myths about autism, a general term for neurological disorders that can impair development. Lewis Schofield is a Grade 9 student in Peterborough, where Trent University is honouring him with a Community Leader Award for Youth. Schofield is often online, using blogs, artwork, videos and podcasts, providing information about his health issues including Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. He also participates in a Family Autism Forum on Yahoo. ”I was just doing what I always do,” Schofield said in an interview with CBC News. “I always do my best. It’s just how I was raised.” ”He was very surprised and very shocked that he had been nominated, never mind had actually won this honour,” Elyse Bruce, Schofield’s mother, told CBC news.

Elyse Bruce, on the latest podcast featured on Irked

Elyse Bruce (Founder, midnightinchicago.com):

We interviewed Douglas Giesel who has Multiple Sclerosis and Lewis, who talks about Asperger Syndrome and Myasthenia Gravis. Both interviews are very enlightening as they discuss the obstacles of invisible disabilities and how the outside world reacts to those with invisible disabilities.

Douglas talks about his MS and about the stereotypes he used to have about Autism. He even uses the phrase “… something that IRKS me to no end …” Hahaha!

And then there’s the ever delightful Lewis and he has a lot to say about Autism, about his new school situation, about his latest diagnosis and more.”

Elysian Folk Anthems

Elyse Bruce is a songwriter, composer, arranger, performer, educator, and arts events organizer. With a strong background in classical, jazz and pop music, calling Elyse an eclectic artist only scratches the surface. Elyse defies labels and convention, preferring to write and perform according to her heart’s desire. And yet, each song written and each song performed retains a quality that can only be described as Elyse’s “signature sound.”

A member of the American Federation of Musicians (local 446), the Peterborough Arts Umbrella, the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, the Guild of Canadian Film Composers, and SOCAN, Elyse balances her time between writing and recording music, wrangling with new technology, teaching songwriting and marketing courses at Trent University, raising her totally awesome Asperger child [Lewis Schofield, a regular Irked contributor], and thinking up—and putting into motion—new and exciting projects that involve as many people as possible.

Elyse can be found online at http://www.ElyseBruce.com. Her latest project, an artist-driven international autism fundraiser called Midnight in Chicago, can be found here.
