“Butterflies”: A beautiful poem (and painting!) by Donna Williams

butterfly

By now, you all know Donna Williams. Here’s a poem called “Butterflies” that Donna wrote recently.

.

if someone takes your disabilities and makes them your
gilded cage
then you take charge of your disabilities like never before
for they are your fallibility, the keys to your cage

a key you allowed someone else to call theirs
because they taught you this was love and caring
and in the light of day you realise it had nothing to do
with you

so you look in the mirror and say, wow, there’s a fool
and brush off the dust and say, ok, so the world is full of
fools so I’m in good company

and you look at your life and say, wow, there’s an island
but islands can build bridges

and you look at your smile and say
wow, I’d forgotten I could wake up with this

and you look at your time and say
you ain’t Florence Nightingale, so follow that smile
because a heart shouldn’t be heavy
it should be light
because a heavy heart will never fly
and butterflies can.

.

Being funny about the unfunny: a lighthearted poem about dementia

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Dr. David E. Thomas is a 60-year-old male physician specializing in psychiatry. He was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) in October 2007, and currently runs this very active, very wonderful blog. Here’s a lighthearted poem about an utterly unfunny subject that recently appeared on Dr. Thomas’ website:

.

Forgetter Be Forgotten

My forgetter’s getting better,
But my rememberer is broke
To you that may seem funny
But, to me, that is no joke

For when I’m ‘here’ I’m wondering
If I really should be ‘there’
And, when I try to think it through,
I haven’t got a prayer!

Oft times I walk into a room,
Say ‘what am I here for?’
I wrack my brain, but all in vain!
A zero, is my score.

At times I put something away
Where it is safe, but, Gee!
The person it is safest from
Is, generally, me!

When shopping I may see someone,
Say ‘Hi’ and have a chat,
Then, when the person walks away
I ask myself, ‘who the hell was that?’

Yes, my forgetter’s getting better
While my rememberer is broke,
And it’s driving me plumb crazy
And that isn’t any joke.

Jane Goetzee is an artist based in the UK. She holds first and Masters degrees in Fine Art at the University of Staffordshire and has worked for many years as a community artist. She writes poetry, makes short films and soundscapes, most of which focus on issues of identity, stereotyping, and representation. As a Person who has Experienced Anxiety and Bouts ODepression for Years (Peabody), Jane uses cartooning to cast a less stigmatizing light on issues of mental distress. She also works part-time as a disability adviser and runs a support scheme for families with disabled children. She is closely involved with the Journal of Literary Disability as copy-editor and keen advocate. She is currently planning a research project that will explore the topic of arts in health from a disability studies perspective.
